Reempresa enters 2021, preventing the closure of 3,000 Catalan SMEs

January 22, 2021

Reempresa, the market for buying and selling small and medium-sized businesses in Catalonia, an initiative launched by the employers’ association Cecot and Autoocupació in 2011, reached 3,000 successful business transfers at the beginning of this January. These success stories have generated an induced investment of over €138M and have prevented the loss of more than 8,200 jobs in Catalonia. During 2020 alone, and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Reempresa Centre of Catalonia prevented the closure of more than 330 businesses.

Retail sector companies, the most in demand

According to data from the Reempresa Centre, 33.6% of the businesses sold through the service are from the retail sector, followed by hospitality businesses, which represent 32.2% of all successful business transfers. Companies in the services sector account for 27.1% of total transactions, followed by industry (5%) and construction (1.6%). The remaining 0.5% corresponds to businesses in the agricultural sector.

45% of entrepreneurs are unemployed

45% of individuals who have purchased a business through the Reempresa Centre of Catalonia were unemployed. Thus, this business transfer tool has become in recent years a mechanism for unemployed individuals to become self-employed by acquiring an already operating business and maintaining the jobs the company already had.

The average selling price: between €34,000 and €155,000

According to Reempresa, the average selling price of businesses is between €33,887 for retail companies, €34,640 for hospitality businesses, €49,000 for service companies, €109,300 for construction and renovation companies, and €156,500 for industrial companies.

30.5% of people who sell their business do so due to retirement

Among the main reasons for selling businesses, Reempresa highlights that retirement is the reason in 30.5% of successful cases, followed by personal reasons (12.48%), career change (12.2%), or health reasons, in 7.7% of cases.
