The course Knowledge and Presentation of Catalan Wines is designed for working professionals who want to deepen their understanding of Catalonia’s wine heritage and communicate it with expertise and professionalism in gastronomic, cultural, and wine tourism settings. What you will learn

  • Identify the denominations of origin and native grape varieties of Catalonia.
  • Recognize the production, fermentation, and aging processes and their influence on the final product.
  • Apply presentation and tasting techniques to professionally communicate the wine’s attributes.
  • Appreciate the relationship between territory, climate, and wine style to convey its identity and quality.

Course Objectives

This course prepares you to gain in-depth knowledge of Catalan wines, from their origins to their international projection. You will learn to identify the characteristics of each denomination of origin, native grape varieties, and production and aging techniques. You will also acquire the skills to professionally present and communicate wines in tastings and wine tourism activities.

Content Plan

Catalan wines

Introduction to the history and wine diversity of the region, its native grape varieties, respect for the terroir, and the international projection of its wines and cavas.

The winemaking process

Understanding harvesting, fermentation, maceration, and aging techniques, and the role that materials, temperature, and time play in the final wine quality.

Denominations of origin

Analysis of the main Catalan DOs and the traits that make wines from Priorat, Penedés, Empordà, Montsant, Terra Alta, Alella, Costers del Segre, Pla de Bages, Conca de Barberà, Tarragona, Catalonia, and Cava unique.

Presentation and tasting

Application of presentation, tasting, and communication techniques to accurately describe the visual, olfactory, and gustatory attributes of wines, adapting the message to the audience.
